Top Mistakes Therapists Make in Private Practice, and How to Avoid Them
Launching a private practice is an exciting milestone for any therapist. But without the right guidance, many new clinicians fall into common traps that can lead to unnecessary stress, burnout, or slow growth.
If you’re in the early stages of building your practice, or even just considering it, being aware of these mistakes can help you avoid costly missteps and build a business that truly supports your life and your clients.
Below are five of the most common mistakes therapists make when starting a private practice, and what to do instead.
1. Not Developing an Entrepreneurial Mindset
Most therapists enter private practice with strong clinical skills but little to no business training. This often leads to what I call “survival-mode decision-making”, saying yes to everything, avoiding financial planning, and hoping things will eventually fall into place.
The fix: Start thinking of yourself as a business owner from the beginning. That doesn’t mean becoming corporate or losing your values. It means taking ownership of your time, your income, and the structure of your business so it can support your goals, not just your clients’.
2. Being Vague About Your Niche
Many therapists hesitate to choose a niche, fearing it will limit their potential. But the opposite is true: clarity builds trust. When you speak directly to a specific group with a clear problem and desired outcome, the right clients feel seen, and are more likely to reach out.
The fix: Define who you help, what they’re struggling with, what transformation you offer, and how you help. A clear niche allows your marketing to resonate and your referrals to increase.
3. Undercharging or Guessing at Your Fees
New therapists often set fees based on what others are charging, what feels “comfortable,” or what they assume clients can afford. This usually leads to financial stress, burnout, and resentment.
The fix: Calculate what you need to earn to meet your personal and business goals. Factor in taxes, time off, and expenses, and price accordingly. Your fees should reflect the value of your work and support your sustainability.
4. Assuming Referrals Will Just Come
It’s easy to think that if you’re a good therapist, clients will naturally find you. But in reality, people need help understanding who you are, what you do, and how you can help.
The fix: Build an intentional referral network and online presence. Your website, directory profiles, and professional connections should clearly communicate your niche and how clients benefit from working with you.
5. Delaying Systems and Structure
Many therapists put off setting up systems, like scheduling, billing, and documentation, until they “get busy.” But without structure, growth can quickly become chaotic.
The fix: Put simple, streamlined systems in place early. From intake to payment, a clear workflow makes your practice more efficient and less overwhelming as it grows.
Build Your Practice with Clarity—Not Trial and Error
When I launched my private practice, I did exactly what so many new therapists do: I pieced things together, hoped for the best, and figured I’d “tighten things up later.” I didn’t know what I didn’t know, and I didn’t have a guide.
Eventually, I learned, through trial and error, what actually worked for me. And while I’m proud of how far I’ve come, I created the resource I wish I’d had from the start.
